Gibson was the first black woman to play tennis at both the amature & professional levels. She grew up during the Civil Rights movement, making her career as a tennis player difficult. As a young girl, Gibson was trouble, however, as she matured into a young adult, her mentors saw that she had a talent for athletics, & made it their mission to see that she was a success-winning the Wimbledon championship twice in 1957 & 58.
